Plants require food and water to survive and grow, just like humans. The limitations of factors in an environment can affect the growth of a plant. If a plant’s environment does not support the plant’s necessities, then it will come to be a limiting factor for the development of the plant. In addition, light intensity and temperature greatly impacts the growth of a plant. To begin with, light intensity is vital to plants as it has an important role in the process of photosynthesis. Photosynthesis converts energy from the sun into food sources such as glucose and starch for the plants to grow. Fertilisers come into play when the soil is deficient of macronutrients and micronutrients.

Fertilisers help plant’s raise its fertility and growth by applying either chemical or natural fertilisers to it. The macronutrients which can be found in packaged fertilisers often have three elements, which are: Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium. A plant requires large amounts of these elements in order for it to grow (In class note, biology exercise book 2014). For that reason, the plant will not grow without these three elements. In addition, there are two types of fertilisers which can be used to help plants grown more efficiently: Organic fertilisers and inorganic fertilisers.

Animal wastes and plant residues are organic fertilisers and are very ineffective for the reason that it does not have a high concentration of nutrients, therefore will need large amounts for it to be productive. In addition, it is also time consuming as it takes time to decompose into its inorganic form for it to become available to plants (Organic vs Inorganic Fertilisers, CSBP 2012). On the other hand, inorganic fertilisers are much more efficient and more productive than organic fertilisers because it has sufficient concentration of nutrients, which in turn is available to the plants as it is already in its inorganic form. Additionally, plants do not need large amounts of fertilising like organic fertilisers as it has a high concentration of nutrients (Organic vs Inorganic Fertilisers, CSBP 2012). Even though fertilisers benefits the growth of a plant, there is also a downside to it.

Fertilisers can pollute the environment by contaminating the water because of its nitrates and phosphates. The main reason why fertilisers are polluting the water is because the plants are not absorbing all of the fertiliser given, making the remaining fertiliser flow into streams and rivers. First of all, the nitrogen of fertilisers will ultimately break down into nitrates because of the bacteria in the soil. These nitrates are a hazard to the health of a human being because these nitrates can spread into the groundwater and into streams, dams and rivers, which humans drink (Environmental problems with fertilizers, Dr. Arvel Hunter and Dr. Terrence Fullerton 2014).
