Earth Hour is an annual international event, organized by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). This event actually asked us to think about what else we could be doing to make a difference to save our Earth. Countries that participate will switch off their lights for one hour to display a universal commitment to protect the one thing that unites us the entire planet. Unfortunately, most of us do not notice that this campaign will bring side effects, if we as a citizen participate in this campaign in a wrong way. Hence, the campaigns of Earth Hour has innumerable uses and like all campaigns, it has its drawbacks which encompass negative impact on human activities, enhancing energy reduction as well as releasing emission to the environment and perception of people about Earth Hour.
One of its drawbacks is it encompassed of negative impact on human activities.
The favourite activities of the youth when they participate in this campaign is that they prefer to hold activities that are harmful to the earth rather than save the earth. For example, they will go to a concert to celebrate this event in the wrong way. “Just do a”, (2011) says that there are also some families or couples who like to make a candlelight dinner. Indirectly, they have increased carbon dioxide emissions because for all activities that conducted will use transportation and hence it will burn more petrol and release more carbon dioxide (“Just do a”, 2011).Besides, candlelight dinner activities will also have an adverse effect because it will liberate carbon dioxide and air pollutants such as soot when burning the candle . People should think about the pros and cons when they do something. They cannot arbitrarily create activities to celebrate this event which ultimately affects the earth. Therefore, the activities that affect the earth should be avoided and replaced with more useful activities so that the event will achieve its goal of providing inspiration to the people about the importance of saving the earth.
Another of its drawbacks is enhancing energy-reduction as releasing emission to the environment. According to “Earth Hour will”, (2011), “Even if power station are turned off, the upsurge in turning the lights back on one hour later will require power stations that can fire up quickly like oil and coal”. Besides, burning candles as a source of light will contribute to increase the release of carbon dioxide gas. During the earth hour event, most people will use candles. As we know, every candle that is burned for an hour will increase by 9.6g of carbon dioxide (Weston, n.d). Based on observations, it is found that the rate of carbon dioxide gas produced from burning a candle is about 10 times more than the rate of carbon dioxide resulting from the electricity generation corresponding to the use of 13 lumens worth of lighting which is equivalent of one candle in just one hour. This shows that actually burning enough candles are the same as you emit carbon dioxide at...
