One reason teachers should not be able to carry guns because guns are currently illegal in schools; Guns are illegal because they are dangerous. The Gun Free School Zone Act (GFSZA) is a federal law that was accepted in the United States in 1990. According to the GFSZA, “It shall be unlawful for any individual knowingly to possess a firearm at a place that the individual knows, or has reasonable cause to believe, is a school zone.” In order for teachers to carry guns, we would have to discard this law. Also, the school board would have to create a new policy, allowing teachers to carry guns. Adjusting the rules would be time consuming and confusing. According to some political leaders, “It would put the students and faculty in more danger than ever before, anything can happen! The students can get hold of the firearm easily and hurt someone/themselves!” (“Should”). Supplying our teachers with guns would give our school instability and worry people.
Some people believe that supplying teachers with guns would decrease danger and threats. Colorado States Senator, Ted Harvey said, “I don’t think schools are safe when they are gun-free zones and criminals are the only people who carry guns. Then the others are sitting ducks and can't defend themselves.” This is not true because according to the United States News, Debate Club, “Armed guards were present at a school in a Columbine shooting, and were unable to stop the shooters from killing 12 students, a teacher, and injuring many others.” This data shows that having the firearm at the shooting did not affect the turnout. Many citizens also believe that a firearm could stop an attack or shooting. Governor of Maryland, Martin O’Malley says, “It's hard to imagine a level of weaponry that a security guard . . . would be carrying on their belt that could have resisted the sort of attack that that individual perpetrated in Newtown.” O’Malley says no matter how many guns the school has possession of, the school would still have trouble preventing attack.
