British Columbia is the fourth largest aquaculture producer in the world. The province and everywhere else that loves seafood relies on the production of aquaculture. However, many do not know what they get when the glory of farming fish comes with. Salmon is one the most common fish and British Columbia wanted to make sure that who ever wanted it could get tons of it. While global warming has been driving wild salmon stocks up north, British Columbia came up with their own solution, Aquaculture. It was the perfect thing due to the fact, British Columbia has 20,000km of coastlines and 25,000 lakes and many rives and streams to raise fish. This became an issue to the Natives living near the coastlines in BC due to the fact the lice have been harming the native fish stocks. Though, sea lice is not harmful to humans, the First Nations are worried about the infestation of sea lice due to salmon farming. Major stakeholders involved with this issue are the environmental organizations. The David Suzuki Foundation has had a strong voice of salmon farming. They are opposed to aquaculture and have been trying to convince consumes to avoid salmon that were farmed. The Rain coast Research Society, another organization that was intended for study research for whales, however, founder Alexandra Morton has turned her head over to salmon farming. She has been an effective advocate against salmon farming. She used her research as a base to campaign to stop or modify fish farming practices. Sea lice are not the only problem that has been faced with this issue. BC’s salmon farming had started to use open net-pens, which allows farmed salmon to escape and survive in the wild. This brought afloat the issue of competition for habitat. The concern was that the farmed salmon might reproduce and fight for spawning space and food with wild salmon. Another major concern is the pollution the farms release into the ocean waters. Since most of these farm sit right inside the Pacific Ocean, the waste from the fish are harming the ocean ecosystem. Waste such as feces, uneaten food pellets, dead fish, blood from fish, pesticides, coloring agents, disinfectants and other materials used on the farms.
