Ruby Bridges
At the age of six years old, many children are playing outside, interacting with other kids, and are living a relaxing and carefree lifestyle. But that was not the case for Ruby Bridges, six-year-old activist, who spent most of her childhood fighting for integration in schools. Without the perseverance, determination and huge contribution to the Civil Rights Movement from Ruby Bridges, the schools’ policy on integrating the educational system might have never changed.

And out of the six chosen to integrate the city’s public school system, two decided to stay at their old schools. The other three students were assigned to McDonough and Ruby was assigned to William Frantz alone. That morning Ruby and her mother were escorted by four federal marshals. When inside the building, instead of spending her first day getting a better education she spent it sitting in the principal’s office. Through the window, Ruby could see “white parents pointing at her and her mother, shouting and shaking their fist, then rushing their children out of the school.” That day she never made it to her classroom (Bridges). The next morning the marshals drove her and her mother back to the school again. “I tried not to pay attention to the mob. Someone had a black doll in a coffin, and that scared me more than the nasty things people screamed at us.” (Bridges). From then on Ruby’s mother told her, “If you get afraid, say your prayers. You can pray to God anytime, anywhere. He will always hear you” (Bridges). From then on Ruby began praying every morning on her way to school. That way the things people yelled didn’t seem to hurt her. Prayer was Ruby’s protection. When in the school Ruby was greeted by a young, white woman who greeted Ruby with, “Good morning Ruby Nell. Welcome, I’m your new teacher, Mrs. Henry.” Mrs. Henry took Ruby and her mother up to her empty, second-floor classroom. Ruby took a seat at the front of the class and began to learn the letters of the alphabet.
