According to Phil Hooker, writer of “online articles about the franchises” excluded “GTA was originally intended to be named Race’n’Chase, until Dan and Sam Houser renamed it Grand Theft Auto in 1995.” Rockstar, the releasing company, first GTA was released in 1997, and since then, there have been thirteen other versions of the game. Every GTA game has a different theme and story. For example, GTA Vice City takes place in Miami Florida, with an 80’s theme and music. GTA has always been rated M for Mature, because of its violence, strong language, and sexual content. Being available to only adult gamers, GTA is still the most popular worldwide action-adventure game.

The maps on GTA games are fictional cities, which resemble real cities in the U.S, like Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and Miami. It has been popular because players can take on a criminal role, roam around a big city and act out things they can’t do in real life.
Another plus is that, GTA has improved a lot on their graphics quality. Rockstar feels that the newest game, GTA IV, is next generation (Rockstar). The game quality in the older versions of the game is mediocre, compared to the newest game, GTA IV. Phil Hooker from Rockstar argues “GTA IV surpassed [Rockstar's] own expectations, with substantial improvements made to the gameplay and graphics from GTA 4.”
GTA have Offline story-mode and Online Story-mode. Story mode is one of the most popular things about every GTA game. Story-mode is what the games theme and story is about. Players can play with different characters, which come from different backgrounds and would fit every individual players culture. Gamers can make tons of money and earn respect from other characters in story mode. Once players complete story-mode, there are still other activities players on the game players can do; for example, players can take scuba lessons to explore underwater sections of the world or take flying lessons (“GTA”). Also after completing the story mode, areas on the map becomes unlocked. Playing Online mode allows you to create your own character.
