The Energy Destroying Us
General Purpose: To Persuade
Specific Purpose: To persuade my audience that they should advocate the use of alternative power sources other than nuclear energy.
Central Idea: Nuclear energy only contributes a small amount to the world’s electricity yet it has hazards and dangers that far out-way its benefits. There are many other alternative power producing sources that can produce energy more efficiently and more safely than nuclear power plants can.
Organization: Monroe’s Motivated Sequence

Much of the farms in the Fukushima Prefecture area were contaminated by radiation and these contaminated crops were distributed for consumption throughout the country and many Japanese citizens as far as Tokyo might have been exposed to unsafe levels of radiation in their food. These are just some of the effects from the radiation spewed from the plant. The location of the power plant contributed greatly to the severity of this accident, but upon closer examination many of the power plants in the U.S. are similarly placed.
II. (Reveal Topic) According to data from the 2010 US Census 116 million people in the United States live near nuclear power plants and are encompassed in their emergency planning zones (Montgomery 131). Many of these power plants are also built on coastlines or on seismically active sites. These cause inherent risk to the nuclear reactors. An earthquake could damage critical systems and a major hurricane along a coastline could also flood power plants and cut off electricity supplies.
III. (Establish Credibility) As an advocate of alternative energy, I have done extensive research of nuclear reactors and their dangers. I have seen that no matter what safety measures are in place, there is always room for catastrophe.
IV. (Preview Body of Speech) There are safer and more efficient ways to produce energy for this country other than nuclear energy and each of us can do our part to advocate for the halting of additional nuclear energy power plants. There are many inherent dangers posed by nuclear reactors and the by-products of nuclear energy are a hazard to us and to the future of our environment. Thus we must do what we can to stop the expansion of nuclear power.
Transition: Let’s begin by examining the dangers posed by power plants.
Body
I. (Need) Nuclear reactors are inherently dangerous and pose a threat to neighboring communities. As shown by recent incidents most reactors if not all of them are vulnerable to catastrophic meltdowns despite claims of safety precautions.
A. Would many of you live near a facility that could endanger you or your community? What if I told you that, that facility was a nuclear power plant?
1. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s safety records from the past four years, a myriad of safety violations were found in nuclear power plants that could have lead to disaster. If the regulatory commission discovered so many violations, how could nuclear power plants still be labeled as safe?
a. Among the violations that US power plants incurred were missing nuclear material, back up power generators that did not work properly, corroded cooling pipes and even marijuana use inside a nuclear power plant and the commission has done nothing to correct these problems (Flarend 152).
• B. Supporters of nuclear power always report that nuclear power plants have safety measures in place that will prevent catastrophes from occurring however there have already been many close incidents to date that could have turned...
