"Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall; Humpty Dumpty had a great fall; All the king's horses and all the king's men couldn't put Humpty back together again." This story with many other stories started my journey to literacy from the womb till now. My mother started to read to me soon after she found out she was pregnant. Knowing I wouldn’t understand her, she still read to me because she knew I could hear her. As my brain grew inside my mother her words began to grow inside my brain.
As a six-month-old baby picture books were my best friend. Even as a baby my mother felt it was important for my little eyes to see these beautiful detailed pictures, but also to hear what each picture was. Pointing to each picture, saying each word gave my brain more and more knowledge. When I got to the age to see pictures and understand some words, picture books began to fade away. Books with some pictures were read out loud to me before bed. By the age of two I developed speech and other communication skills. This helped me understand and develop a favorite book, “Where the Wild Things Are,” and I would stare at the pages pretending I was reading them. I would continually pretend to read with other Dr. Seuss books, Smurf pop-up books (I imagined I was a part of these for hours), sniff & scratches, and sensory books.
Libraries were my weekend hobby and sometimes after school in my early ages. My mother and I began to pick out short length chapter books. As my mother read to me, she had a technique of doing it. She would run her finger across each word making sure to pronunciate each syllable so I could understand. This allowed me to slowly interpret each word in my head and read along with her. Once I could repeat little words such as "the," “an”, “a”, and other similar words, my mother would let me say that word a few times when it appears in each book we read. This method taught me to be quite an advanced reader by the age of 5 and was heading into kindergarten. ...
