The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People EssayThe book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People wrote by Stephen R. Covey provide us seven habits that will give us a powerful lesson thus change us into effective people. So I will list all the seven habits from the book below, and analysis how they relate to me as a student.The first habit from the book is to be proactive. Being proactive means we need to make action in advance. Rather than waiting for others to make decisions and then we react according to them, we should do it beforehand. In the book, Covey uses the example of circle of concern to illustrate how to focus proactively. He (2004) asserts that "proactive people focus their efforts in the Circle of Influence. They work on the things they can do something about. Reactive people, on the other hand, focus their efforts in the Circle of Concern. They focus on the weakness of other people, the problems in the environment, and circumstances over which they have no control" (p. 83). It means that he suggests us to actually work on the problems and thus influence the conditions rather than worrying about the problems. I was a reactive people before. I like to complain the problems to my friends because I am stressed out and being too worried, but I never think about to change the conditions practically. However, my point of view changed when I was studying in Greece. After my midterm for my Global Experience class, I found out my grade just pass the course and it was nearly to fail. I was really frustrated, so I kept complaining to my classmates how difficult and course was. One day, my roommate told me to stop talking to everyone, and talked to my professor and saw how I can improve my grade, and I did talk to my professor. My professor told me to go to the writing center to fix my grammar mistake, so my grade would go up. So I went to writing center for the next assignment, and the result was impressed, because my grade did go up. After that, I became more proactive to find ways to solve problems rather than worry about it.The second habit from the book is to begin with the end in mind. Covey (2004) defines to begin with the end in mind as "to start with a clear understanding of your destination" (p. 98). He indicates that we need to find out our goals and then make a plan on how to approach our individual goals. I learnt this habit after I transferred back to Northeastern. After a month studying at Northeastern, I found out the courses are relatively difficult in Boston. I always rushing myself to finish assignments and papers at the last minute, and I accumulate too many pages of textbooks to read before every test. So I found out I was so stressful before every due date or exam day. So my friend suggests me to make plans and do a little bit of work each day instead of saving all the work for the last minute.
